I ventured into the unknown today and made (with the help of my fabulous wife who did the icing) my son’s birthday cake.
He’s 9 years old today, and is crazy about Indiana Jones, so what better birthday cake to make him than a fairly unique ‘Indy-runs-from-a-giant-gobstopper-while-escaping-from-the-temple-of-doom’ one.
Actually, I’m quite proud of it, and Son Of Mandrake was stoked! It’s pretty weird that a father and his son can have the same hero!

That is one cool cake. Can you tell me how you managed to make that? How did you make the silver icing and construct the cake? What’s in the treasure box – it looks like Cap’n Crunch cereal? Are those Twix bars for the fencing?
Thanks for posting this!
Posted by Brian and Holly | June 5, 2008, 5:44 amHi there. Thanks for your comment!
I bought 2 square sponge cakes. Kept one whole for the base and cut the other into 4 long rectangular pieces to make the temple. The grey icing was made with black food colouring. I found some gold-nugget bubble gum and put it in the temple and in a Lego treasure-chest. The fencing is just ‘chololate-finger’ biscuits cut in half (Popular and here in New Zealand, far cheaper than Twix bars ;-) Hope that helps!

Posted by Anonymous | August 26, 2008, 4:32 pmI love this cake! We’re having an Indiana Jones party for my 5 year old tomorrow and this is by far the best cake idea out there. Thanx for explaining how you did it. I grew up in Canada and know exactly what you used for fencing . . . not sure about it in the USA. Thanx again for the amazing idea!

Posted by Symon | August 28, 2008, 2:18 pmHello from Edinburgh Scotland, I love this cake. My Harry is turning 7 on 1st December and I would love to copy your fab cake. One question did you make the Indiana figures, or are they brought? Cassie
Posted by Cassie Bouverie | November 11, 2011, 10:55 pmHi Cassie. Thanks heaps for visiting my blog! The figurines are ones I bought at a toy shop when the last Indy movie came out. Not sure if they are still around. Maybe try ebay etc? Cheers from New Zealand ;-)
