My top 5 childhood crushes

In May I reminisced about my childhood heroes… today you get to read about my top five childhood crushes (lucky you).

5. The Abba girls

I confess my very first childhood crush was on Agnetha and Anni-frid. My siblings were all teenagers when Abba-mania came to the Drake household (late 70s). I was four years old. Ahhhh young love.

4. Daisy Duke

I’m sure EVERY boy alive during the Dukes of Hazzard television series (1979-1985), had a crush on Daisy.

3. Wonder Woman

Who can forget the lasso throwing, bad-guy thumping Wonder Woman (1976-1979)? I guess she was everything a five-year old wanted in a lady.

2. Princess Leia

Princess Leia Organa made it to number two. She was definately a woman who could take care of herself. I bet Han Solo camped in the lounge a lot.

1. Wilma Deering

Coming in at number one (none of the others come close) is definately the lovely Wilma Deering from ‘Buck Rogers in the 25th Century’ (1979-1981). I know I’m not the only guy who had a crush on Wilma growing up (right Lesmond J?).

It’s amazing how the seductiveness and the tight body suits of the 70′s didn’t even register in my young mind. The age of innocence was great. Looking back, I think the most attractive aspect about them was that most of them were in cool TV programmes/movies with lots of action and explosions and guns.

Well, almost 3 decades later, I am a very happily married man, and have an incredible wife! How does DW compare to my childhood crushes? DW blows them all away. She’s real too… not a creation of TV land!

Do you believe in Emily?

Seeing isn’t believing anymore. The future is now and the future is scary.

By the way… Emily is not real. She is a computer generated image.

It’s how we finish that matters

With the Olympics almost at an end, and in light of other recent events, I thought it was a good time to post a link to the recent renewalyouth study: ‘The Race’.

It’s important to remember that the race of life is not a sprint, it’s a marathon, and it’s not how we start the race that matters, it’s how we finish that ultimately matters in light of eternity.

O Praise Him

I had a great day today, until I heard some sad news about someone. Bad news is like a wet blanket… it cannot be easily shaken. It leaves you feeling really down (understatement of the year). Paisley Jade (wife) was on the bed browsing facebook (as she does). I snuggled up next to her (as I do). Hold up, don’t think it was all romantic like… we had a crying-unsettled-snivelly-nosed baby inbetween us ;-)

Anyway, she showed me the following clip. It brought tears to my eyes, put everything in perspective, and proved yet again that God is good regardless of the circumstances or the news, and that the garment of praise really does combat the wet blanket of heaviness.

Be blessed.

Bigfoot… Bigfake

The post title says it all.

Last week a body of Bigfoot was found, this week it was discovered to be a hoax. Bummer, I was hoping it was real. A lot of people are disappointed right about now. (Especially the guy who paid $50,000 for the body :-)

Mr. Mum

I take my hat off to every stay-at-home mother out there. You girls are legends!

Paisley Jade (that’s my wife) has been in bed with a very bad flu for the last few days, so I’ve taken a few sick days to cover for her. We have four kids, who need fequent feeding, washing, and cleaning up after… especially our youngest, so it’s pretty much a full time job making sure she doesn’t get herself killed (she’s an 18-month old adrenaline junkie). So I’ve been cooking, cleaning, bathing, feeding, nappy-changing, clothes-folding, book-reading, dish-washing, medicine-giving, chauffeur-driving, play-fighting, discipline-giving, room-tidying, grocery-shopping, and being a nurse for DW.

I will say it again, stay-at-home mums are legends! Definately the most under-appreciated job in the world.

DW… I appreciate you so much… Get well soon! The small amount of sanity I have left is quickly depleating.

My Chucks: old and new

Some of my friends write deep-meaningful-daily-devotional-awe-inspiring posts. I write about stuff like sneakers.

Chuck Taylors are undeniably the best shoes in the world.

My first pair (classic black low-cuts), have been attached to my feet almost every day for a year. I bought them on special for $39 at the Warehouse. As I need to feed 6 mouths, and pay off a mortgage on one wage, $40 is about my limit when it comes to splashing out on footwear.

Alas, in recent weeks my trusty ‘Chucks’ (as I affectionaly call them) have started to look tired. So, I have been praying for a new pair…

Last week, I found some amazing brand new Chucks on Trademe (had just been listed), for ‘Buy Now’ of $40, with free shipping! Beige and black double upper/double tongue high tops… yeeharrr! God is good, and really does care about the little things like sneaker preference ;-) .

This morning, the package arrived at my door. I was absolutely stoked, until I discovered they were 10′s instead of 11′s. A friend of mine told me to go on a foot diet, or wear stockings. The first suggestion is impossible (as far as I know), the second is just plain wrong… It did give me an idea though. I ‘borrowed’ a pair of my wife’s thin socks (instead of my usual thick woolly ones), and they’ve done the trick!

Chucks Rock with a capital R! (The following commercial proves it…)
